“In This Together” celebrates the extraordinary leaf cutter ant. This family of ants live and work together in their underground colony of over a million ants, where each individual has its own role to play, but the same goal as every other ant in the colony – to thrive. By working together, leaf cutter ants can strip an entire tree of its leaves overnight. These pieces of leaves are then used to feed their fungus production, which becomes the food source for the entire community. With their amazing strength, each ant can carry fifty times its own weight. Other ants in the colony have different roles such as gardening, house cleaning and security detail. Their society is so large and complex, it is thought to only be rivaled by humans. From the example of the leaf cutter ants, I am reminded that we need every person’s gifts, strengths and talents in order to have a truly beautiful, multifaceted, flourishing society.
